From Clinical Research to Culinary Ventures
Transitioning from a clinical researcher to a food entrepreneur is no small feat. For Aline Martinez, an ex-clinical researcher, this journey has been marked by a passion for authentic Mexican cuisine and a desire to introduce these flavours to Singapore. Having spent years in clinical practices in hospitals and clinics in Mexico, she made a significant career shift that has brought her a new kind of fulfilment.
The Move from Mexico to Asia
Initially, the move was driven by her husband’s job, taking them first to China and then to Singapore. Reflecting on her nine years in Singapore, she recalls her first impressions of the Mexican food scene: "It was very limited. Of course, we are very far, but the ingredients were not really a lot. And also, the food was not very authentic, even though there are some places that are nice. But Mexican culture is not really developed here."
The Desire for Authenticity
The limited availability of authentic Mexican ingredients and dishes in Singapore ignited a desire to change the landscape. Missing the flavours and culture of her homeland, she was motivated to provide her children with a taste of genuine Mexican cuisine. This personal longing dovetailed with a business project she had in mind, leading to the creation of a small Mexican food business. "Of course, we miss Mexican culture and Mexican food. And for us, also, to have our kids to know and to remember the real Mexican food."
Lessons from TechFin Global Launching a Startup Course
Embarking on this entrepreneurial journey, she found valuable insights from the course. When asked about her key takeaways, she emphasised the importance of social media in building a business. "Oh, there's a lot, especially social media. I learnt about the basics for social media, how to get into more markets, and to gather information before releasing a product."
A Bright Future Ahead
Her journey from clinical researcher to food entrepreneur is a testament to the power of passion and adaptability. By introducing authentic Mexican flavours to Singapore, she not only bridges cultural gaps but also preserves the rich culinary heritage of her homeland for future generations.
As she continues to grow her business, her story serves as an inspiration to others looking to follow their dreams, no matter how unconventional the path may seem.
